For as long as you own it

Lifetime Exchange & Buyback

Trade any Divija piece towards another, or sell it back to us, with no time limit. This page sets out exactly how the value is worked out, so there are no surprises at the counter.

Two ways out

Exchange, or sell it back

The difference is what you receive. Exchange returns more, because the value stays with us as credit; buyback returns money, and costs a little more to do.

  • Option one

    Exchange

Put the value of your piece towards a different one. You receive 100% of its gold value as credit, plus the assessed value of its stones, against a new order of higher value.

  • Option two

    Buyback

Sell the piece back to us for money rather than credit. You receive 90% of its gold value, and its stones are assessed separately.

  • Both options

    No expiry

There is no window to miss. The exchange is linked to the piece’s original invoice and certificate, and is honoured on the terms current at the time.

The numbers

How the value is worked out

Gold first, then the stones, and making charges are not returned. The same rules apply to every piece, whatever it cost.

  • Exchange

    100% of gold value

The full weight of gold in your piece, valued at the Divija rate on the day of assessment, credited towards a new piece of higher value.

  • Buyback

    90% of gold value

The same gold weight at the same day’s rate, paid to you as money rather than held as credit.

  • Certified stones

    Valued at 15% less

Stones that came with an independent laboratory report are valued at 15% less for exchange and buyback purposes.

  • Uncertified stones

    Valued at 25% less

Stones without an independent laboratory report are valued at 25% less for exchange and buyback purposes.

  • Other stones

    No refund applicable

Stones outside the two categories above are not eligible for a refund on either route.

  • Making charges

    Not returned

Making charges paid the artisans who built the piece. They are not recoverable on either route, which is worth knowing before you buy.

The rates above are the standard terms and can change. The figures quoted to you at assessment are the ones that apply to your piece, and we put them in writing before you decide. See the conditions at the foot of this page.

The process

How to exchange or sell back

Nothing is irreversible until you accept the written valuation.

  • Tell us what you have

Send your order number or invoice and a few photographs of the piece. We confirm it is ours and give you an indicative figure before you send anything.

  • Send it in, insured

We arrange an insured pickup at our cost, or you can bring it to us. The piece is insured for its assessed value from the moment it is collected.

  • Assessment

The gold is weighed and its purity confirmed, and any certified stones are checked against their reports. You get the itemised valuation in writing.

  • Credit or payment

Accept and the credit is applied to your new order, or the money is transferred to the account that paid for the piece. Decline and we return it, insured, at our cost.

Why we do it

The reason a hallmark matters this much

A lifetime buyback commitment only works if the metal in a piece can be verified quickly and cheaply. That is precisely what the BIS hallmark and its HUID give us — the purity was tested by an independent assaying centre when the piece was made, so twenty years later we are confirming a record rather than starting an argument.

The same goes for stones. A certified stone has a grading report from an independent laboratory describing that exact stone, which is why a certified stone is valued at 15% less on a return where an uncertified one is valued at 25% less. It is not that an uncertified stone is worth nothing; it is that nobody can agree on what it is worth without re-grading it.

Keep the certificate and the invoice. They are not paperwork — they are a good part of what the piece is worth back to you.

The conditions

What the scheme covers

Four conditions, all of them ordinary. If your piece does not meet one of them, ask anyway — we would rather look at it than turn it away by email.

  • Divija pieces only

The scheme covers jewellery bought from us, identified by the original invoice or order number. We do not buy in jewellery made by anyone else.

  • The piece must be intact

Normal wear is expected and fine. A piece that has been altered, repaired or re-stoned elsewhere is assessed on its metal alone.

  • Stones are valued by their paperwork

A stone with its original laboratory report is valued as a certified stone; one without is valued as an uncertified stone. If a report has been mislaid, tell us the order number — we usually hold the details.

  • Exchange goes upwards

An exchange must be against a piece of higher value than the credit. Any difference is payable; credit above the new piece’s value is not refunded as money.

Questions

Exchange and buyback, answered

Is there a deadline for exchanging or selling back?

No. That is what lifetime means here — the offer does not expire. It is linked to the original invoice and certificate, so keep both with the piece. What can change over that time are the rates and conditions, which is why every valuation is quoted and confirmed in writing before you commit.

How are the stones in my piece valued?

Certified stones are valued at 15% less for exchange and buyback purposes, and uncertified stones at 25% less. Stones falling outside those two categories are not eligible for a refund. Every figure is itemised in the written valuation you receive before you decide anything.

Why do I not get the making charges back?

Because that money was spent, not stored. Making charges paid for the labour of designing, casting, finishing and setting the piece — work that cannot be recovered by melting it down. Every jeweller works this way; not all of them say so before you buy.

Which gold rate is used — the one I paid or today’s?

The rate on the day of assessment, not the day you bought. If gold has risen since your purchase you benefit from the rise; if it has fallen you carry the fall. The rate used is stated in your written valuation; our gold rate page shows a live market reference.

I have lost the certificate for my diamond. What happens?

Tell us the order number — we hold the certificate details against your original order and can usually retrieve them. Where a stone genuinely cannot be matched to a report, it is valued as an uncertified stone, or we can arrange re-certification at your cost.

Can I exchange a piece that was given to me as a gift?

Yes, provided the piece can be traced to a Divija order. Bring or send the invoice, the gift receipt or the order number. Payment on a buyback is made to the account that originally paid, so a gifted piece is usually simpler to exchange than to sell back.

Is this the same thing as a return?

No, and if you have just received the piece you want the returns policy instead, which gives you a full refund rather than a valuation. Exchange and buyback are for pieces you have owned and worn.

This page describes the scheme in general terms. Exchange and buyback rates, deductions and conditions are set by Divija and may be revised; the terms quoted to you in writing at the time of assessment are the ones that apply to your piece. Valuations are made against the piece as presented and are not an appraisal for insurance purposes.
